Having a good, comfortable, earpro headset is a lifesaver on those long range days. Below are a number of recommendations we have for good earpro (in a few different price ranges).
The main pair that we want to highlight for non-comms/helmet ear pro is one of our favorites, the Peltor RangeGuards. They do a really good job and don't break the bank. The pads are more comfortable than the Howard Leights as well as the Walker Razors.
If you want all the comforts, then we recommend looking at getting some Noise Fighters Sightline Gel Pads to go with your Range Guards for a quick and easy upgrade.
With the addition of the NoiseFighter gel pads, this is a great setup - and you're still looking at around $100 all in. We tested almost 20 sets of ear pro, all at the price point of $200 or less and the Peltor RangeGuards were our favorite of the bunch.
Below are our main recommendations for budget earpro ($40-$60 range).
If you're looking for more of an upgrade from the RangeGuards or Howard Leights, below are some great options. Though they are more pricy, they are definitely worth it if you can afford them.
Mid-Tier ($200-300 range) Ear Pro Recommendation:
You can't go wrong with Sordins. We have run them and can attest to their durability and comfortability.
Why do we recommend the neckband version over the headband? Though the headband is still a great option, the neckband can be worn under the helmet. Another plus to the neckband is that you won't have as much stress on the top of your head like when wearing the headband variant.
High-Tier ($600-800ish range) Ear Pro Recommendations:
Our team here at T.Rex has been running these and agree that they fit key Safariland standards ... they're reliable and efficient.
A few other great High-Tier options are:
All in all, it depends on how many features you are wanting, what type of pad you need in order to get the comfort you need, how clear you want your comms to be, etc.
Can you simply use plain earplugs? Yes, you can, but they don't guarantee full protection from all decibel levels, so we much prefer a pair of speaker-assist earpro. In addition to that, speaker-assist earpro allow you to hear what's going on around you.
