Entry Level | Aimpoint PRO | Aimpoint Duty RDS | High End | Aimpoint Micro T-2 | Aimpoint Comp M4s | Direct Comparisons and Conclusions|
Aimpoint has been well known for producing reliable, high-quality optics. Due to this reputation and history of performance, they are one of the brands we trust to sell to our customers and use on our rifles. In the following article, we'll go over the models we carry and their differences.
Entry Level
Aside from the high-end optics they are known for, Aimpoint makes several entry-level optics. These options maintain the quality that Aimpoint is known for at a lower price point but tend to offer fewer features. For those on a tighter budget, the two entry-level optics we sell are the Aimpoint PRO and the relatively new Duty RDS. These options can be a great starting point that won't sacrifice dependability.
Aimpoint PRO
The Aimpoint PRO has been our go-to budget optic for the past few years. While budget is subjective to the end user, this is the cheapest optic we trust on our rifles. While the PRO might not be the lightest, most compact red dot on the market, it is a highly durable, time-tested, and proven option. This doesn't come without downsides, however. The PRO uses 2L76 or DL1/3N batteries instead of the much more common CR2032 or AA options in the other Aimpoint models we sell. These batteries can be hard to source locally, so if the PRO fits your needs, it would be wise to stock up on these less common batteries.
Aimpoint Duty RDS
The Duty RDS is Aimpoint's newest entry into the "budget" optic market. The Duty RDS shares many similarities with the more expensive T-2, but it offers less battery life and lacks some nicer features of the T-2, like tooless zero adjustments. It uses the same mounting footprint as the T-2, but because of the different housing, the Duty RDS sits about .45" higher than the T-2 on a similar mount. We have a complete guide article HERE if that particular topic interests you. The Duty RDS weighs around half of the weight of the PRO and uses the more common CR2032 battery, but it is also slightly more expensive.
High End
Aimpoint's higher-end options may as well be the standard for unmagnified optics. While these options are quite a bit more expensive, you generally get what you pay for. They offer longer battery life and more features than the aforementioned entry-level options, so if budget isn't a concern, this is where you should look.
Aimpoint Micro T-2
The Aimpoint Micro T-1/T-2 is one of, if not the most iconic micro red dot. The T-2 maintains a lightweight and small overall footprint while being very durable. The Micro T-1/T-2 footprint is also very popular, which makes the T-2 extremely modular. For this reason, we sell the T-2 with no mount since most end-users want the ability to use one of the many aftermarket mounts available. The T-2 uses the same CR2032 battery as the Duty RDS but offers 50,000 hours of battery life and offers tooless zero adjustments, unlike the Duty RDS.
Aimpoint Comp M4s
The Aimpoint Comp M4s is by far the heaviest option on this list, but it makes up for that with durability and a remarkable 80,000 hour battery life. The M4s runs off of a single AA battery instead of the CR2032 found in the Duty RDS and Micro T-2. It comes ready to go out of the box with Aimpoint's QRP2 mount and a threaded killFlash. The M4s is one of Aimpoint's toughest options, so if weight is of less concern than durability, the M4s will fit the bill.
Direct Comparisons and Conclusions
While we only sell 4 of Aimpoint's carbine optics, they make quite a few options with varying prices and features. Any of these would be a great choice from a company with Aimpoint's reputation, but the models listed above are our first choices. Mission dictates gear, so use the above information to form your opinions and pick the optic that suits you best.
