You can find the MP5 platform in many different shapes and sizes. Combining aesthetics and reliability with a remarkable history, the MP5 has it all. We'll break down our current configuration of this MP5A2 clone in this loadout.
The MP5 is known worldwide for its reliability, and few optic companies can genuinely boast the same as Aimpoint. This T1 sits on an American Defense mount with the throw lever on the right-hand side. Typically, we install the mount so that the throw lever is on the left-hand side, but we reversed the mount because this platform has a unique manual of arms.
While we did go through the paperwork to obtain an SOT, we can't overstate how ridiculous this law is. Just because we paid the government more money, they granted us the right to obtain automatic firearms. This argument and thought process is ridiculous. The reason T.REX ARMS went through this process is so that we could obtain autos like this and start shifting culture toward civilian ownership.
Over the years, a lot of companies have offered different MP5 handguards. SureFire, Knights, and even Magpul have offered handguards for this platform, some of which included lights built into the handguard itself. This RAS rail from Knights Armament may not stand out on this build, but we love the simplicity and adaptability of this system.
On this build, we looped the rear of the sling into the provided loop on the A2 fixed stock. This cuts down on hardware, keeps everything simple, and reduces noise caused by the HK hooks the stock was designed for. The A2 style stock may not have any adjustment, but it does offer a comfortable cheekweld and a solid platform for shouldering.
Up front, we have an IWC Offset QD point to connect the front of our sling. Some may wonder why we don't have a single-point sling for this small build. We have found two-point slings on a full-sized rifle balance and control the gun when slung. These concepts still apply to smaller rifles, and we tend to set up two-point slings whenever possible.
For a time, we were playing with multiple lights on one gun to demonstrate inaccuracies in particular video games. Regardless of the monstrosity that is pictured here, we do recommend a quality light for every gun because seeing in the dark is cool, and so is positive identification. SureFire has been well proven, so we decided to double up on this MP5.
One thing to consider when setting up an MP5 is charging handle clearance. Because the bolt does not lock back on an empty magazine, the first step to reload this platform is to rock the charging handle back and up. We want to keep the space around the charging handle clear and free to move and don't want to be moving fast and bump our light on when we are moving to reload the gun. We also don't want to slip and fumble a reload because we hung our finger on the light or the mount. All considerations to make when using HK roller-delayed guns that share this charging handle concept.
It's reasons like this that we prefer lights to be mounted on the right-hand side of the gun. Unfortunately, it's not going to be easy to activate the light unless we run a tape switch down to the vertical grip or the left-hand side of the gun. At the end of the day, though, you will have to learn how to use what you got. If you have a light but no pressure pad, figure it out and become proficient.
Another key feature of this rifle is the paddle mag release. Notice where the mag release button is to the left of the magwell and how far it sits from the rear of the grip. That's a long reach for anyone, and most tend to use their support hand pointer finger to drop the mag. It's not ideal, but once again, you have to learn the systems to become proficient. Thankfully, we did add a paddle mag release, so it's easier to strip the mag while pushing this tab with your thumb.
You may not have an MP5, and you may not have auto capability on your primary gun, but remember that winning gun culture takes generations of sharing information. We will continue to share cool guns in the armory. Still, we hope you will share your gun collection and the joy of shooting with others that may not understand the importance of the second amendment or the preservation of innocent life.
